RAM or PROCESSOR; WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT IN CONSIDERING A SMARTPHONE? (Detailed guide)

 As we can all attest, over the years smartphones have become a great deal in our daily lives; Over time, smartphones have been used to carryout various tasks and perform various functions.

   Tasks ranging from not just making calls and text messages to the use of various social media apps online, multitasking, gaming, internet banking and Mobile photography, just to name a few. As a result of all these, the need for smartphones with higher processing capabilities arise.

   In this article, I'll be discussing which one is more important, comparing the RAM of a smartphone to the kind of processor it possess.

   RAM, short for Random Access Memory is a short term digital memory that is basically used to 'hold' data for a while especially during the use of active applications on your phone.

With this definition, this implies that the data stored on the RAM can be lost after a while. This is usually reliant on two basic factors which include;the amount of RAM available(capacity of the RAM) and wether or not the smartphone was powered off or rebooted.

   In the case of RAM capacity, as to most things, the higher the number, the more the capacity- measured in Gigabyte (GB). This indicates that from a less broad perspective, a 3gb RAM device would definitely be better than a 2gb RAM device.

   And as for wether or not the phone was powered off or rebooted at some point in time, it's logical to say the RAM being used to 'hold' data for a while can be termed as a temporary memory which is only active while the device is powered on. And so contents stored on the RAM would be lost after the device is powered off.

   Now, since explanations to what the RAM is have been cleared out, I'll be moving briefly to explaining what a processor is.

   A processor is a CPU chip usually found in smartphones and portable computers. With performance concerned, the processor present in a smartphone has a huge role to play.

   You might be wondering which then is more important between the RAM size and processor speed? Well both are important. However, they perform various functions, with each affecting overall performance in an entirely different way.

  The RAM is basically involved in multitasking and it actively determines how many apps can run simultaneously at a time and the speed at which you can switch between them. So the higher the RAM, the better the ease of multitasking.

   The processor speed indicates how powerful your smartphone is and how suitable it is for heavy duty tasks such as gaming. The processor clock speed is measured in Gigahertz (GHz), and the higher this is, the more powerful a processor can be said to be (leaving aside the technical fact that processor type is also another factor that determines it's speed). So a processor of 2.2GHz can be said to more powerful than a processor of 1.8GHz (all things being equal).

  That said right, the higher the processor speed, the better and more efficient a smartphone is at performing heavy tasks and the higher the number of RAM, the more the ease of multitasking and smoothness of app launch.

   Now to put all these together, we'll be citing an example in the case of two smartphones;
#1- OctaCore 1.8GHz and 3gb RAM
#2- OctaCore 2.2GHz and 2gb RAM

From the above, we can tell that smartphone #1 would definitely do better in terms of multitasking and app switching but would run slower while #2 would do better in terms of higher performance but might not be all that efficient at multitasking.

   A smartphone with balanced specifications such as RAM of 3gb+ and processor of clock speed 2GHz+ for example, could seem to run smoothly for a regular user. However, as we all know, every good thing comes with a price (*winks). Whichever way, I believe now wether you're in need of multitasking or high performance abilities, you should already know what to go for (not leaving aside your budget though!)

  2. For me I'll say The processor is more important because a very good processor will have proper ram management....take for instance the iPhone X when released it came with 3gb ram but yet was fluent in the performance of task because of the chip
